Proofreading

Proofreading is normally the final stage of the editing process, where we are refining your manuscript, TV or film script ready for submission to an agent, publisher or producer. If you are planning to self-publish, a proofread before publication is highly recommended. This service can also be provided for business publications, websites, blogs, reports, academic papers, journal articles or essays.

Proofreading involves examining the following elements as a final quality-control exercise:

  • spelling, typographical, grammatical and punctuation errors

  • preliminary matter (cover, dust-jacket material, spine copy, preliminary pages, acknowledgments, copyright and publication information)

  • body of document (margins, text, illustrations, tables, captions, footnotes and endnotes)

  • end matter (appendixes, glossary, lists of abbreviations, references, bibliography, index)

  • links and metadata

  • consistency of format and fonts

  • conformity with editing style sheets and specific house styles

Corrections will be noted on the hard copy, or via tracked changes for the client or typesetter. The proofreading report includes a style sheet, and details any major changes or issues that were encountered.

Estimated fee: 2 to 4 cents per word.

Please note that the above fee is only an estimate, and it is based on jobs that are 10,000 words or more. The actual quote will be provided once I have received a final draft of your work. This will ensure that the quote is based on your specific editing needs. You can request a no-obligation quote by submitting the form on my Contact page.
